Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
Castille is the most eclectic of Théah’s nations. It has shared an alliance with the Crescent Empire, is one of only two nations not ruled by sorcerous blood, and is the current home of the Vaticine Church. Good King Sandoval family sits on the throne, while the countryside is divided into rancheros. Just before his death, Castille’s aging king exiled his eldest son in a fit of rage, leaving a beardless boy to inherit the throne. He has been the subject of several plots of treason, and at least three assassination attempts, but so far remains on the throne, in part due to the efforts of El Vago, a mysterious vigilante.
A family don governs the rancheros for the King, collecting taxes and administering justice. The King is nominally the supreme ruler of the kingdom, but his council of Church advisors powerfully influences his decisions. Because of the Church, each city has a university, making them the most educated nation in Théah.
Recently, Montaigne has invaded Castille, after repelling the Church from its own borders. Nearly a quarter of the country has been claimed as spoils of war by the invading Montaigne army. Since the Montaigne commander Montegue split his army to assault Ussura, however, his forces have lost momentum in Castille, and the two forces are locked in a stand-still.
